For Better or Verse

For Better or Verse is a poetry club that I started in October of 2017. I started this club because I have always used poetry as my outlet, and escape from the world. I realized we didn't have one on campus, and wanted to give students the opportunity to share their pain with one another, and ultimately help their healing process, the way poetry did for me.

My vision was to create an environment where students could share poetry, and discuss topics that are difficult to talk about. I knew that I wanted to create a free, creative environment where they were not controlled by teachers, or authoritative figures, and could speak from the heart without judgement. My rules are simple: You can not bash another person's poem if they share. You can give idea's but there will only be positive vibes in the room at all times. We have discussed topics such as: racism, school shootings, self-image, gun control, sexual violence, mental illness, and other hard topics that our educational system does not seem to speak upon. Each week I give my members topics that they can either write about, or they have the option to bring in work from other poets. I began with only one member, and in the time span of 7 months I now have 6 members; which was my goal! I will continue my journey in making the world a better place, and will never give up helping others, even in the smallest forms.

Life

written by: Olivia Walter

What is life?

A question that is often thrown,

With no true definition that has ever been known.

But I plan on educating about what life is to me.

About the lies that are portrayed to us on stage,

But the truth is actually behind the scenes.

So stick with me when I speak to you about the world that I have known.

Whether you can relate or not I hope you learn something from this poem.

So here goes nothing,

The life of a 19 year old.

May not know much, but this is what I have observed as I’ve grown.

Surrounded by misery, and the cold hard truth,

Forced to take medicine from the facts, because I am the proof.

Of what a world without much privilege, and no connection to the throne,

So here goes nothing in a form of a poem:

We live in a world where we help others before helping our own;

while they sit there and suffer to a world unknown

to our big and powerful heads sitting on their thrones.

While their own people scream at them, but love them all the same.

Where money is the only object of this game.

Where hunger and homelessness is just an average rule,

While others can see it’s a problem,

but run away from it too.

We say “The land of the free” while we force our offspring into our religion,

how can this be free when we still assume our women are in the kitchen.

While illness is around every corner, and the corporates push their buyers to be healthy.

But at the same time they charge less money for a 12 piece.

While the old and wise are beat and ridiculed,

and the young and live are pushed, and told to go to school;

Where we limit creativity because it’s a threat to our society,

but we all just stand as we watch police brutality.

Where the system wants you to shell out money for an education that sucks the life out of you,

Where the student loans cost more than the education that they give you.

Where being seen with the opposite sex is a guarantee for an assumption that will cause distress.

Where being friendly gets you labeled as a whore,

And sticking to yourself only leaves you feeling bored.

Where no-one is safe from the lies and deceit,

That corporate puts in front of us in the form of a receipt.

Where an automatic guard is put on when meeting a new lover,

Because the last one instantly took you right under the covers.

Where people can lie straight to your face,

Without a glimpse of a bitter taste.

Where men have girlfriends back home,

But whisper sweet lies like a metronome.

Where females smile and laugh with you,

While stabbing you in the back without a hint or a cue.

Where our history is based upon murder and rape,

But we all still celebrate with a fucking parade.

Where our leader is telling us he can make America great,

But is ostracizing an entire race.

Where men can take advantage of women whenever they please,

But still expect us to willingly get on our knees.

Where force is more accepted than a mutual agreement,

Because rape is just a woman that wanted and needed it.

Where adoption is looked at as a person’s last option,

While a crackhead mother is serving injustice to her daughter.

Where getting a fix is easier than getting insurance,

Because if you’re not on the top than you have no importance.

Where the military fight for our right,

But taking a knee is covered with spite.

Because what is life without a little damage,

We live in the land of the free

But we are still taken advantage.

Because everyone is a slave

Whether we admit it or not.

Whether it be to corporate greed, religious fiends, or hitting just the right spot.

Because we are all controlled,

With no such thing as freedom.

So let us sit in our pity

As we make another post.

Hoping for a like and itching for a favor.

Because in this so called world,

We are all in danger.

That is what life is,

Don’t let anyone tell you differently.

Even if you are raised where you only see the greener side of things,

The other side of the fence is full of genocide and rage.

So don’t be blind to the fact that the world is cruel,

Because even with a little love,

You still look like a fool.

Saying global warming is a myth, and racism isn’t real.

That’s like loading a gun and pointing it in the face of humanity.

Because you are blind to the fact that you can get away with murder for pleading insanity.

While there are real mentally ill suffering in a room,

Because bullying was a joke and the life was taken from us too soon.

So open your eyes to the fact that the world isn’t perfect,

That you are responsible for your actions and you have to stop ignoring it.

Because the only way for a change is by joining hands and paving the road,

By protesting and speaking out to the world unknown.

About politics, and discrimination, because the king sits on his throne,

Going out golfing and laughing while leaving us, the people, to be left on our own.

So that is what life is.

You don’t have to agree,

But next time when you think everything is sunshine and rainbows,

Swallow your pride and go look in the face of the truth,

That the world is a cruel place,

And life is just a game to see who can make the most money, and gain the most fame,

Where we all end up in the ground at the end of the day.

So what is life?

Answer the question for me.

Think you know what it is?

Damn. That’s funny.

What I want you to realize is life isn’t a joke,

To wake up everyday counting your blessings and living with a purpose,

Because tomorrow you might not be so lucky and that just how it goes.

So love one another, be honest and remember,

We can’t control life, that’s the sad truth,

But we can help make the world a little better,

By being honest with ourselves and coming to terms with truth.

So that’s what life is to me,

I hope you remember,

The words I spoke to you, and you start living a little better.

Cause we only have one shot,

So we have to give it all we got.

Cause in the blink of an eye we are all turning gray,

Looking back on our life, praying for another day.

Wishing to go back in time, to change our ways.

But sadly, life doesn’t work like that,

So live life to the fullest,

and be aware of your surroundings before you are gone unnoticed.

That is all I have to say.

I hope I made you think about the cold hard truth;

That life isn’t what we get to choose,

But instead, it’s what you make of it,

So give it all you got.

Because at the end of the day, we only have one shot.
